Central Saanich Police say they’re looking for witnesses after arresting a man seen firing a starter pistol toward the water at Island View Beach Thursday evening.

Acting Sgt. Ritchie Li says officers were called to the park around 6:30 p.m. and quickly arrested a man and seized a weapon, which had been reported to be a handgun but turned out to be a starter pistol.

Li says the man has been released without charges on a promise to appear at a later date while police continue to investigate to determine what charges, if any, might be appropriate.

But Li says several beachgoers who may have witnessed the incident left before police were able to speak with them.

They’re asking anyone who was at Island View at the time who hasn’t already spoken with investigators to call the department at 250-652-4441, and ask to speak with Cst. Shea or Cst. Robertson.
