Victoria police are searching for a suspect who allegedly broke into a home in the Oaklands neighbourhood when two teenage girls were inside.

Police were called to the home in the 2500 block of Shakespeare Street just before 12:30 p.m. for a report that a man had broken into a home while two teenage girls were home alone.

The girls told police the man rang the doorbell. When no one answered, he allegedly opened the mailbox then went around the back door.

Police said he was able to open an unsecured window to reach through and unlock the back door. As he went into the home, one of the girls saw him. The suspect then turned around fled.

The girls then called a parent for help who called 911. The officers who responded were not able to find the suspect.

The girls were shaken but uninjured, police said.

The male suspect is described by police as Caucasian, in his 50s, with long grey and brown hair and stubble. He was wearing a blue/turquoise sweater and a blue and red baseball hat.
