Friday night brought a dazzling display of the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, to Vancouver Island.

Residents up and down the Island got a rare chance to see hues of green, purple and pink dancing across the night sky due to an exceptionally strong solar storm.

On Friday morning, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the strongest geomagnetic storm in 20 years would reach Earth this weekend, offering most Canadians a chance to see the Northern Lights.

Many Islanders set out on Friday night to see if they could catch the celestial display, and dozens of spectacular photographs were captured and sent to CHEK News.
