Officials say one man is dead after falling from the Johnson Street Bridge while intoxicated early Saturday morning.

The Joint Rescue Co-Ordination Centre was called to assist Victoria Police around 1:30 a.m. and pulled the person and handed them off to B.C. Ambulance.

Witnesses say they saw CPR attempted.

Victoria Police say they responded within 2 minutes after receiving calls that the man lost balance and fell after climbing on a railing. They confirm the incident was not a suicide.

One officer suffered non-life threatening injuries during the incident and several people reportedly attempted to give direction to the man to swim to safety.

Coast guard crews from Victoria’s new station responded as VicPD does not have a marine capacity.

Police are calling the incident tragic, and have handed the investigation over to the B.C Coroners Service.
