A person in a wheelchair was sent to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries following a collision with a BC Transit bus Tuesday evening, according to Victoria Police.

Officers were called to the scene on Belleville Street near Douglas Street just before 8 p.m., a VicPD spokesperson says in a statement to CHEK News.

A BC Transit spokesperson says the collision involved a person using a motorized wheelchair and a bus from its fleet, and photos captured by witnesses show the chair pinned under the vehicle.

“We are supporting the police investigation into this matter, and if anyone witnessed this incident, we ask that they contact the Victoria police,” said Jamie Weiss with BC Transit.

“As this is an active investigation, any further requests for information should be directed at the police.”

On Wednesday morning, VicPD media relations officer Const. Terri Healy said she couldn’t provide “too many details” as the incident was still under investigation. She noted that traffic analysts also attended the scene.

“Our thoughts are with the pedestrian, driver, passengers and all those involved in the incident,” added Weiss in a statement.

He says BC Transit is now conducting its own internal investigation.
