A 26-year-old man was seriously injured early Friday morning after he was struck by a car while trying to cross Highway 19A.

Police said the collision occurred at around 1:30 a.m. at the Mostar Road and Highway 19A intersection. Firefighters, police and paramedics responded and the man was taken to a local hospital where he currently remains with serious injuries.

Police said based on independent witness statements and the statement from the 51-year-old Nanaimo woman driving the car, the injured man was trying to cross Highway 19A against a red light and without a pedestrian walk light.

The driver was not injured and her car, a Dodge Dart, was towed away from the scene. It will undergo a mechanical inspection.

The intersection was closed for several hours while Nanaimo RCMP investigated with an RCMP Traffic Analyst. Nanaimo RCMP are still investigating but alcohol/drugs and vehicle speed have been ruled out as contributing factors on behalf of the driver.
