Pedestrian dies after being hit by suspected impaired driver in Nanaimo: RCMP

Nanaimo RCMP has taken a driver into custody to be investigated for impaired driving, after he fatally hit a pedestrian on Tuesday.

In a release, RCMP says the driver hit the pedestrian around 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Boundary Ave and Meredith Road.

The pedestrian, an adult woman, died at the scene. An official on scene says the victim is a 53-year-old Nanaimo resident. She was walking on the sidewalk when the driver of the truck hit her, then a lamp post.

BC Emergency Health Services paramedics witnessed the crash, so were on scene instantly, according to the official on scene.

Boundary Avenue between Meredith Road and Nelson Street is closed while police investigate.

The driver, an adult man, is in police custody to be investigated for impaired driving.

RCMP says there is enough evidence collected at the scene to lead to an arrest, and now are working to determine if he was impaired at the time of the crash.
