The City of Nanaimo is implementing pay parking on the streets surrounding the hospital starting on April 1.

Parking on some nearby streets will cost $1.25 per hour, consistent with rates in the downtown core. Additionally, some streets will be restricted to a maximum of two-hour parking between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. All pay parking will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.

The city says this change is in response to residents raising concerns about street parking challenges for residents and visitors to businesses in the area.

The HotSpot Parking app can be used to pay, and there will also be parking kiosks on Boundary Avenue and Dufferin Crescent.

“As our city grows, so will the demands on our infrastructure,” Mayor Leonard Krog said in a news release.

“The addition of HotSpot Parking is consistent with our mission to deliver efficient services and improve the overall quality of life for Nanaimo residents.”

Full enforcement of the paid parking will start on April 8.

The fees collected will be used to fund the enforcement, repair and maintenance, meter operation and future parking projects.
