A passenger of a vehicle that veered off the Island Highway in Union Bay was airlifted to the hospital on Tuesday with non-life threatening injuries.

Comox Valley RCMP says emergency crews freed both the driver and passenger in the single-vehicle crash and the driver said he may have fallen asleep before the vehicle went off the road.

Police say the crash happened around 11:30 a.m. in the 5600-block of Island Highway South, and the vehicle crashed into a deep ditch.

Members of the Union Bay and Cumberland Fire Departments were able to free the two inside.

The investigation is ongoing, but police say it does not appear that alcohol or speed are contributing factors.
