Three people were taken to hospital following a head-on crash in Oyster River on Sunday.

According to Campbell River RCMP press release, at around 3:15 p.m. on June 28 a vehicle heading southbound was in the turning lane waiting to enter the Discovery Foods parking lot when it was struck by a vehicle heading northbound that had crossed the centre line.

The vehicle turning into the parking lot then flipped over while the northbound vehicle ended up hitting another vehicle, the release added.

Campbell River RCMP officers along with members of the Oyster River Fire Department attended the scene. Two people were transported to the hospital in the Comox Valley with minor injuries and one person was transported to Campbell River Hospital with minor injuries.

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in this accident, Campbell River RCMP Const. Maury Tyre said in the release. The northbound driver who caused the collision was charged with driving without care as a result of the collision. We were amazingly lucky that nobody was seriously injured or killed as a result of the crash.

Campbell River RCMP credited the Oyster River Fire Department for their “excellent work and care” during their response.

Authorities also credited members of the public who were on the scene and provided first aid at the “risk of their own well being” immediately after the crash.

Campbell River RCMP said officers could have handed out at least 15 tickets to motorists for failing to obey emergency lights and sirens of responding vehicles as well as traffic directions from officers.

“When officers are proceeding to a call with emergency lights and sirens activated it means that there is an immediate threat to human life that officers are trying to get to. The public’s responsibility is to stop and pull over to the side of the road when you notice lights and sirens,” the release said, adding. “This means no matter which direction you are proceeding you must pull over and stop. Then at an accident scene, you must follow the traffic directions of the officers present or the traffic control personnel.”
