A popular Victoria restaurateur has reportedly died after he contracted COVID-19.

Chad Rennie, owner of Rain Dogs Wine Bar in Victoria’s Chinatown, died in hospital this weekend, according to a Facebook post from his partner Angela Rennie.

“You are my teacher, my lover, my best friend, my everything…and now you are free,” she wrote.

A GoFundMe page created to support Rennie’s family after he fell ill recently provided an update saying his condition deteriorated over the past week and he was transitioned to palliative care on the weekend.

Rennie first tested positive for COVID on Aug. 6 and was airlifted to hopsital in Vancouver Aug. 19, being placed in a medically induced coma shortly after that.

There have been 60 deaths from COVID-19 in the Island Health region and 8,163 cases of the disease since the pandemic began, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control.
