Lake Cowichan RCMP have identified a new lead in an ongoing arson investigation thanks to the overwhelming response they received from a public appeal for information last week.

On Friday, they revealed they had received multiple reports on August 22, 2019 of three fires, believed to have been deliberately started in the area of Skutz Falls and May Rd.

The RCMP said that a man riding a BMX-style bicycle was seen in the area at the time of one of the incidents. He was described as white, skinny, with dark hair, black pants, and a fedora-style hat, and possible facial hair.

The RCMP credit “fast thinking bystanders” for quickly extinguishing the fires in the area, and say that the man on the bike fled prior to police arriving on scene.

On Tuesday, they provided an update saying that they were able to identify a man believed to have additional information about the case.

“The Lake Cowichan RCMP would therefore like to thank the public for their assistance,” a press release reads.

The investigation into the arson cases continues and the RCMP ask for anyone with additional information to call 250-749-6668 or go to the the Lake Cowichan RCMP Office at 70 Stanley Rd, Lake Cowichan and reference police file 2019-1525.
