More than 100 people stood at Market Square to celebrate the launch of the 2022 Go By Bike Week event Wednesday.

The popular, province-wide event invites people to ride to wherever they need to go on bikes or other environmentally friendly modes of transportation. This year, there will be more than $20,000 in prizes available to be won by riders who take part in the event.

Go By Bike week runs from May 30 to June 5  and registration is free. Riders will only need to log at least one ride on Gobybikebc.ca

“I think we’re gonna see more riders this year, people trying out cycling. In part the infrastructure is here. Kids, and sometimes moms, sometimes seniors, don’t feel comfortable getting out and getting their bikes right beside a car,” said Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps. “With the safe, separated bike network, it does make it safer and that will increase ridership for sure.”

A Trek Verve+ 2 E-Bike is among the top prizes. Bike to Work Week’s annually closing BBQ will transform into its first ever ‘block party’. Organizers will be hosting their first block party on June 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fernwood Square. Their party will feature food and prizes.

One of the event’s sponsors — Capital Bike — will be launching a new mobile app just in time for the event. The app will allows riders to register for the event, use its interactive bike map, view schedules, and more.
