Out of control wildfire sparked near Port Alberni Thursday night

Fire crews were battling a new out of control wildfire Thursday night near Port Alberni.

The BC Wildfire Service’s online ‘Wildfires Map’ shows the fire started at Arbutus Mountain, west of Port Alberni, and just east of Devils Den Lake.

The Coastal Fire Centre says the fire is 0.3 hectares in size, and was first discovered shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday.

An initial attack crew was deployed on the ground, with support in the air from a helicopter and air tankers.

Fire officials say smoke from the fire is highly visible in Port Alberni, but there is no immediate risk to any structures.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
