Order Up: Victoria Pie Company a sweet success story

At this downtown eatery, the proof is in the pie.

Tucked away in Victoria’s Public Market, Victoria Pie Company has been baking up a sweet and savoury success story for more than a decade now.

“If you can think about it in a pie shell, we probably do it,” said Victoria Pie Co. managing partner Chelsea Lake in this week’s “Order Up!

The shop on Douglas Street opened 10 years ago where it still stands, and thanks to its founder having her eye on the pie, customers new and old keep falling in love with the crusted creations.

“We have a very loyal customer base that comes back for our pies again and again, and then people who are finding out about us all the time,” Lake told CHEK News.

Whether it’s a popular apple or tangy lemon cream pie, a signature steak and mushroom or a classic chicken pot pie, the crew at Victoria Pie Co. are putting all the fixings in a pot, then a pan, and serving up a smile.

“I thought it was absolutely fantastic. I really like the concept of putting a pie in a pan, and then she heated it up immediately as soon as I started ordering. Really, really good,” said one customer visiting from Washington state.

“I try to cook a lot, so it was something that I’ve kind of made, but they definitely did a better job than me,” added another.

And for a third customer who recently moved to B.C.’s capital, you could say Victoria Pie Co. is the apple of her eye.

“One day, when my husband and I passed here, they were out of apple pie. And then they said come back in 15 minutes. We saw the lady make it from scratch. Fresh apple with a peeler, and then they make it for us right away,” she said.

“So I was quite impressed.”

But it’s the pride of the pie that makes this place so special, and with a small team of just three employees, the pro-pie-etors know how to whip it real good.

(Founder and owner Robyn Larocque stands in the Victoria Pie Co. kitchen more than a decade ago.)

“Robyn is the originator, founder, owner. She started Pie Co. here, and then because they needed a good ice cream option, she also founded Parachute Ice Cream, so she’s the owner of Parachute as well,” said Lake.

“I think coming to Pie Co. is a really casual experience. You’re going to be greeted with very friendly customer service and the answers to all of your questions, and just a really high-quality ingredient product.”

The bakers loving their venue is the cherry on top.

“It’s a great space. Really nice to share this space with other vendors, and I think a lot of people in Victoria don’t necessarily know that (the market is) here and that there are so many options available,” added Lake. “Very casual, but comfortable.”

So whether it’s dining in or taking a hot pie to go, Victoria Pie Co., with its local, fresh ingredients, continues as the city’s oldest-running shop of its kind with no signs of cooling down.
