One person has been shot and another stabbed near a homeless encampment in Nanaimo, RCMP say.
Const. Gary O’Brien tells CHEK News that at around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Mounties were called to the encampment near the old White Spot restaurant on Terminal Avenue.
He says when officers arrived on scene, one person was suffering from a shotgun injury.
According to O’Brien, the gunshot victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
In a statement to CHEK News, BC Emergency Health Services says two ambulances and a supervisor responded, and paramedics transported one patient to hospital in stable condition.
Just after 4 p.m., Nanaimo Fire Rescue took to Twitter saying firefighters were “conducting a technical rescue” in the 100-block of Terminal Avenue.
“Please avoid the area,” read the tweet.
In an update on Thursday, O’Brien said two men were taken into police custody; however, no charges have been laid.
Police Dog Services also responded and located a firearm in the vicinity of the incident.
“Investigators are continuing their investigation and are expected to be on scene for most of the day,” said O’Brien in a release.
While police were investigating the shooting, additional resources responded to a report that a man had been stabbed in the 100-block of Victoria Road.
RCMP said the victim was not cooperative and no suspects have been identified.
His injuries were considered minor, was treated in hospital and later released.
O’Brien said the two incidents are unrelated.
Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP.
In March, Nanaimo business owner Clint Smith, 37, was shot in the stomach and suffered serious injuries near the same encampment.
