One person is dead after an apartment fire in Merville on Tuesday afternoon.
At around 11:45 a.m., fire crews from Courtenay and Oyster River were called to the blaze at Hillview Apartments on Hillview Road, just off Old Island Highway (Highway 19A). The top floor, which has four units, was in flames when firefighters arrived.
Courtenay Deputy Fire Chief Kurt MacDonald said one person died in the blaze. Another person was treated for smoke inhalation.
The building is an eightplex and reportedly housed 11 occupants. RCMP investigators are at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire crews from Oyster River were also called to a second fire in Black Creek, near the highway, when they were putting out the first fire. Oyster River Fire Chief Bruce Green said the fires were not connected.
According to Green, a person was burning a stump when their RV caught fire. The RV was destroyed but there were no injuries.
