A man in his 20s has died following a single-vehicle accident in Campbell River.
Campbell River RCMP officers were investigating an unrelated break-and-enter at a business at Westgate Road and Island Highway at approximately 4 a.m. on March 28, when a vehicle began driving towards them at a high speed.
Before the vehicle managed to hit police officers, it lost control and crashed into some nearby trees.
One passenger, a man in his 20s, was ejected from the vehicle and transported to hospital, where, according to the RCMP, he later died from his injuries.
The driver was taken into custody for investigation.
Campbell River RCMP said in a press release that there is no link between the break-and-enter they were investigating and the crash.
The Campbell River Major Crimes Unit is now conducting an investigation into the crash and has not ruled out speed or alcohol as contributing factors.
The Independent Investigations Office is also investigating the crash.
