UPDATE: Northbound lanes of Highway 1 reopened following fatal two-vehicle crash near Nanaimo’s Airport Monday afternoon

RCMP have confirmed one person is dead following a two-vehicle crash on Highway 1 near the Nanaimo Airport.

The two-vehicle collision occurred at around 3:25 p.m. on Highway 1 at Spitfire Road, south of Nanaimo. Ladysmith RCMP, South Vancouver Island Traffic Services and Vancouver Island Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service were called to the scene.

Police said that a southbound vehicle on Highway 1 made a left turn in front of a northbound vehicle.

One person was pronounced deceased at the scene. Their name has not been released at this time.

The northbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway are closed between Spitfire Way and Vowels Road, near the Nanaimo Airport, following a fatal collision. Drive BC said there is a detour available via Cedar Road to Adshead Road in Cassidy.

The northbound lanes are expected to reopen at around 10 p.m.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
