One person is dead after a pickup truck collided with a car at an intersection in Port Alberni Tuesday morning.

Port Alberni RCMP said at around 11:37 a.m., a pickup truck going east on Burde Street collided with a car turning left off Carrier Road. Both vehicles ended up in a nearby ditch and the car landed on its roof.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“It is early in our investigation of this crash. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash. And visibility at the time was poor due to the dense fog in the area,” Cpl Amelia Hayden, media relations officer with the Port Alberni RCMP, said in a statement.

Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service and the BC Coroners Service is also involved in the investigation. RCMP Victim Services are assisting the families involved.

Police have not released the identity of the driver of who died. Burde Street is blocked to eastbound traffic from Swordfern Lane and is expected to remain closed for a few hours. The public is asked to avoid the area.

East Vancouver Island, inland Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands are still under a fog advisory, according to Environment Canada.
