One dead after SUV hits hydro pole and catches fire in Duncan

Police say one person is dead after a crash near Lakes Road and Tzouhalem Road in Duncan.

Police say one person is dead after an SUV crashed in a BC Hydro pole then started on fire in Duncan on Monday.

At around 9 p.m. on Nov. 11, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP were called to assist firefighters and paramedics responding to the single-vehicle crash on Lakes and Tzouhalem roads in Duncan.

Emergency crews determined the driver, who was the only person in the SUV, had died.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The identity of the driver has not been released.

Anyone with dashcam footage from the area between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. is asked to call North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522.

“Any witnesses to the crash, or to the driving behaviour of a dark coloured four-door SUV are also asked to call the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP and speak with investigators,” North Cowichan/Duncan Sgt. Trevor Busch said in a statement.

The BC Coroners Service is also investigating the death. The coroner’s service investigates all sudden, unexpected and/or unnatural deaths in the province to determine who died, how, where, when and by what means.
