The Victoria City Council has made a decision to move ahead with a public hearing for a new office tower project which would be located at the current site of the Capitol 6 Theatres.

Local development company Jawl Properties has proposed a 10-storey office building — with the capacity to accommodate hundreds of workers — and would include five retail spaces on the ground floor.

The existing two-storey property, located at 1221 Blanshard Street, has operated as a six-screen movie theatre for decades and was purchased by Jawl back in 2015.

As part of Jawl’s proposal, the new site would include an Urban Plaza on the ground floor to go along with three levels of underground parking.

Jawl said in its initial proposal to the City of Victoria that the new development would “optimize the potential of a currently underutilized and pedestrian-unfriendly block end.”

City Councillors may just agree with Jawl as on Thursday, February 3, a unanimous vote was made to move the project forward to a public hearing.

More information about the public hearing for the project will be made available at a later date.

More to come.
