An officer who arrived at a fatal crash north of Mill Bay in June has been cleared by the Independent Investigations Office of B.C.

The Victoria Police member was off-duty and IIO says after they came across the accident they provided first aid to the injured male — who later succumbed to his serious injuries.

IIO adds the officer still stepped in as the situation was dangerous, and repeatedly sought to prevent injury to a witness.

On June 17 at around 2:15 a.m. officials say there was a collision involving a number of vehicles, including a motorcycle, going north on the Trans-Canada Highway just south of the Cobble Hill Road and Cowichan Bay Road intersection.

A black Corvette car and a green Kawasaki motorcycle collided, causing debris to scatter all over the road. One witness told CHEK News that debris was seen more than 100 metres from the initial scene of the collision.

The motorcycle rider was in his 20s and from Quebec. One other person was taken to a hospital from the scene and released with minor injuries.

The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. They investigate all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.

The incident will not be referred to Crown Counsel for consideration of charges.
