The Oak Bay Police Department attended the University of Victoria this weekend in order to break up a gathering of approximately 100 people.

In a report released on Monday, Oak Bay Police say that officers were called to the UVic campus on Saturday, January 9, in order to assist security in breaking up a large gathering.

The gathering, which officers estimate was approximately 100 students, was held in the bushes off Haro Rd and Cedar Hill Cross Rd.

After officers attended, the groups “spread out and continued to meet in smaller groups around campus,” reads a statement from Oak Bay PD.

Police note that several students were not wearing masks.

The Saanich Police Department was also called in to assist in breaking up the gatherings.

Oak Bay PD says that two students – an 18-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man – were fined $230 for the “Fail to comply with direction” under Section 6(1) of the Emergency Protection Act for not dispersing after being directed to by the police.

The gathering was held a few days before UVic kicked off its winter semester.
