Deep Bay Fire Rescue said there were no injuries after a vehicle fire on Highway 19, past Fanny Bay, that led to major traffic delays for drivers going south.
Firefighters was called to the fire was near the Cook Creek Road turnoff at around 2 p.m.
When firefighters arrived, the surrounding grass and bush were burning, along with the vehicle. Firefighters put out the small wildfire first then tackled the vehicle, Deep Bay Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Edward Pater said.
Just before 2:30 p.m., Tanis Wynn posted a photo on Facebook showing traffic at a standstill on the highway. She wrote that a truck was on fire and emergency vehicles were arriving.
Debbie Gent also reported her daughter was stuck in the traffic.
The truck was destroyed in the fire but no injuries were reported.
Firefighters arrived back at the fire hall just before 3:45 p.m.
There are also ongoing delays in the area due to the Highway 19A closure between Cook Creek Road and Berray Road for 1.8 kilometres (10 to 12 km south of the Buckley Bay Ferry Terminal) for road maintenance.
