Residents of a Courtenay home escaped uninjured after a fire destroyed their house and camper Saturday evening.

The Courtenay Fire Department responded at 8:14 p.m. to the 40-block of Salsbury Road.

They extinguished the blaze but had to return a few hours later, after a fire flared up again at the home.

The residents and their two dogs sustained no injuries.

Neighbours say they escaped only with the clothes on their backs.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, the Courtenay Fire Department believes the fire started in the carport.
