The Bay Street bridge's eastbound lane will be closed overnight Monday to Friday as construction is completed.

The City of Victoria says night closures in the eastbound direction of the Point Ellice Bridge, commonly known as the Bay Street bridge, are set to begin Monday.

According to the city, the eastbound night closures are required as the final phase of the Point Ellice Bridge Rehabilitation Project is completed. The eastbound lane closure for drivers and cyclists will start at 7 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. Monday and Friday.

Pedestrian and wheelchair access will be maintained at all times and eastbound cyclists must dismount and walk their bikes across with pedestrians. There will continue to be local access to businesses and homes in the area.

The closures are expected to last through December as scaffolding is removed and the contractor departs from the worksite. The $6.1 million rehabilitation project, which began in May, included repairs to the concrete deck, rust protection of the steel, resurfacing the bridge deck, and stripping and painting the steel on the underside of the bridge. These upgrades will ensure the bridge continues to serve the community for decades to come.

The city says work is being done at night to minimize disruption to the public.
