The Royal Canadian Navy is warning residents of demolition training taking place on Bentick Island, just south of the Metchosin area.

The land-based demolition training will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays between Friday, Oct. 27 and Thursday, Nov. 2.

People who live near the area are unlikely to hear the training, according to the navy, though some days the sound may travel onto Vancouver Island if atmospheric conditions allow.

Bentick Island is located just a few hundred metres off Rocky Point Road, between Metchosin and Sooke.

Residents are being reminded that no unauthorized person is allowed to visit the island.

“Training events are critical to ensure military members gain core skills and maintain operational readiness,” said the Navy and the Department of National Defence in an advisory Wednesday.

The Navy adds that a marine mammal observer will be on site to monitor for possible whale activity.

If whales are spotted in the area, the training will be paused until the animals have cleared the site.
