A section of Discontent City has been evacuated and Nanaimo RCMP have called in a bomb disposal unit after items that could be used to build an explosive device were found in the homeless camp Friday afternoon.
Nanaimo RCMP media spokesman Const. Gary O’Brien said the items were discovered by a resident just before 4 p.m. According to O’Brien, the resident carried the items to a fence across the street from Port Place shopping centre.
The area within a radius of about 100 metres is cordoned off and some of the camp’s residents have been moved to the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.
“There were no injuries and no arrests,” O’Brien said.
“The investigation is ongoing.”
The RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit is coming from Vancouver and will arrive around 10 p.m. O’Brien said the unit will remove the items and dispose of them at a different location.
Front Street will be closed to vehicle traffic until the explosive disposal unit clears the area.
More to come.
