As a unique initiative this holiday season, youth in School District 68 have partnered with ICBC and the BC Liquor Commission in order to create positive reminders about not drinking and driving.

In Nanaimo, youth throughout the school district have decorated and designed brown paper bags — that hold liquor purchases — with creative messaging and positive reminders about staying safe over the holiday season.

After the youth finished designing the paper bags, they were distributed to BC Liquor stores throughout Nanaimo.

Ultimately, the messaging is a colourful and positive way of encouraging residents to stay safe and not drink and drive.

The youth loved the idea and it led to excellent discussions on the real-life trials and tribulations of choosing to drink and drive, said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Nanaimo RCMP is encouraging liquor store customers to “take a moment to look at the messaging on that brown bag holding your purchase,” suggesting that it be a reminder for making smart choices around drinking and driving.

Below are a few of the creations made by students at various schools across the district.
