Moving day at Nanaimo tent city for homeless campers, who have started to relocate to temporary housing.

The move from Nanaimo’s tent city to temporary modular housing was underway for homeless campers on Friday morning.

In a release Friday morning, the city says relocation is expected to be complete in the following week from 1 Port Drive to Labieux Road, across the street from Beban Park.

Friday is the day the encampment is slated to close.

Once the occupants have left, the site that housed the encampment since May will be closed for city crews to clear debris and any other structures.

BC Housing says 86 people will be moving into the Labieux Road facilities as contractors worked around the clock to get everything done on time.

BC Housing acquired the modular housing as a temporary solution for the tent city occupants and says there will normally be at least three staff on site at all times.

Support staff include registered social workers, mental health and addiction support workers, cooks, home and community care supports.

The housing is an interim measure as the city, province and Pacific Housing looks for better options.
