Taxi companies in Nanaimo are partnering with the Nanaimo and District Crime Stoppers program to help fight crime in the city.

Drivers with AC Taxi and Yellow Cab will get training on the Crime Stoppers program, what types of crime are most reported and how to submit a tip.

Taxi drivers are an extra set of eyes and ears in our community. They go in every neighbourhood and are on the streets 24/7. Having the taxi companies onboard will provide another tool in our crime fighting arsenal,  said Constable Gary O’Brien, Crime Stoppers Co-ordinator for the local Crime Stoppers program.

In December, the owners of the two taxi companies meet with representatives of the local Crime Stoppers program and were given details on its successes including in the seizure of drugs, arrests, and the recovery of stolen property and weapons.

The owners of the local taxi companies enthusiastically endorsed the partnership and were thoroughly impressed with the amount of illegal drugs seized, arrests made and stolen property recovered, all through Crime Stoppers.

O’Brien says the idea has also received interest from other Crime Stoppers program across Vancouver Island who are looking at rolling it out within their communities
