Nanaimo sees its 34th Silly Boat Regatta

WATCH: Creativity was the name of the game today at Maffeo Sutton Park where hundreds gathered for the Silly Boat Regatta.

Nanaimo’s Silly Boat Regatta is now in its 34th year and this year 40 teams competed in a variety of silly boats.

It was all to raise money for the Child Development Centre, which helps children with disabilities.

Last year, they raised $112,000 and this year their goal was $120,000.

“We’re just amazed at the community support and all the people that still come out to this race because it has been going on for a long time,” said event organizer Tracey Burg. “People are still loving it. All the new generations are enjoying it and who doesn’t like to be silly, right?”

As always, there were some awards to be won, including the silliest boat, silliest sailors and first to sink.
