Nanaimo RCMP seeking person of interest after fire causes extensive damage at Dollarama

Nanaimo RCMP is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a person who is suspected of lighting a fire that caused significant damage in a local Dollarama.

RCMP says the incident took place at approximately 9 p.m. on Monday, March 29.

The suspect was seen leaving the Dollarama, located at 609 Bruce Avenue, just minutes after a fire was reported inside the business.

According to police, the “fire caused considerable damage to one section of an aisle.”

Police and fire crews responded to the incident and investigators were informed that the store was about to close for the day when the fire was spotted by an employee.

“The customers were directed out of the business, sprinkler systems were activated, and fire crews were dispatched,” reads a statement from RCMP.

Although the fire was only contained in one aisle, investigators say it caused extensive damage to the interior of the business.

Customers in the store told authorities that there had been a man spotted in the immediate area of where the fire just prior to the incident. He had also been inside Dollarama for upwards of 15 minutes prior to the fire being reported.

The man was caught on security camera and seen leaving the building through the rear door, pushing a shopping cart.

Police are describing the suspect as approximately 6 ft. 5 with a thin build, wearing a red and pink mask and dark clothing.
