Nanaimo Mounties are searching for a man accused of exposing himself to a teen girl last week.

Police say the 17-year-old girl was walking westbound on Fifth Street toward Wakesiah Avenue at around 10 a.m. Friday when she first noticed the man standing in an alleyway between Hillcrest Avenue and Lambert Avenue.

She said as she walked by and made brief eye contact with the man, he exposed his genitals to her and began walking toward her “while committing an indecent act.”

The girl yelled at the man and told him she was calling police, prompting him to run down an alleyway southbound toward Harwood Road.

The victim managed to snap a picture of the man before losing sight of him, and subsequent police patrols were unable to locate the man.

“The youth did exactly what is expected when confronted with these situations,” said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O’Brien. “She also provided an excellent description which should greatly assist in identifying this person.”

The man is described as white, 5’10” and in his 50s with a medium build, grey hair and a longer, sunken face. He was reportedly wearing a welder-style skull cap, a greyish-purple partial zip-up shirt and brown cargo pants.

Mounties have provided a picture of the man seen walking away from the teen. Anyone who can identify him is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 and quote file number 2022-19747.
