Nanaimo RCMP are investigating a fatal crash in the city’s south end last night. A driver turning left hit a pedestrian who police say was running through the intersection.

Nanaimo RCMP says a 60-year-old Nanaimo man was killed last night after running across Nicol Street at Needham Street.

It happened shortly before 9 p.m. on Monday night and police say there were multiple witnesses.

Police, firefighters and paramedics responded to reports of a man being struck by a full-size pickup truck being driven by a woman.

Const. Gary O’Brien, media relations officer with Nanaimo RCMP, says witnesses said the man was running east through the marked crosswalk when the driver, who was turning left onto Nicol Street from Needham Street on a green light, struck him.

The driver remained at the scene, was cooperative and police say she was distraught.

The man was transported to the hospital and airlifted to Victoria where he was pronounced dead at 12:45 a.m. this morning.

Police have notified his family.

That section of Nicol Street was closed for close to four hours as an RCMP traffic reconstructionist examined the scene. The pickup truck was seized and will undergo a mechanical inspection. The family of the man have been notified.
