Investigators in Nanaimo have released a photo of a vehicle they believe was involved in an attack earlier this month in which a homeless man was allegedly bear-sprayed and run over.

On July 10 at around 09:30 p.m., witnesses reported seeing the man pushing a shopping cart along Victoria Avenue near 102 Street when a small black car with more than one occupant inside pulled up next to him.

A confrontation broke out and someone in the car allegedly got out and bear-sprayed the 45-year-old marginalized man before the driver sped up and drove over him, knocking him to the ground, according to police.

The vehicle then left the scene, leaving the man on the roadway, police say.

On Thursday, police released a photo of the suspect vehicle, saying the image shows it moments after it turned onto Victoria Avenue from 102 Street. Investigators also believe there was more than one occupant inside the vehicle.

The homeless man is still receiving treatment at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, police said.

Police are asking anyone who may have information on the suspect vehicle or those linked to it to call them at 250-754-2345 and quote file number 2021-25532.
