Nanaimo RCMP is investigating a serious crash that shut down Hammond Bay Road Monday afternoon.

Nanaimo RCMP is investigating a serious crash that shut down Hammond Bay Road Monday afternoon.

It happened shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Monday.

Police say a 17-year-old girl was driving southbound on Hammond Bay Road and was making a left-hand turn onto Stephenson Point Road when her car struck a motorcycle.

She had two passengers in the car. None in the car were injured.

BC Ambulance responded and took the man who was riding the motorcycle to Nanaimo’s hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Once he is stabilized, they plan to airlift him to another hospital.

Meanwhile, police say the car was towed from the crash scene and it will undergo a mechanical inspection.

The road was closed for several hours and reopened shortly after six o’clock.
