Nanaimo RCMP say they are investigating a report of a stabbing, which has limited details at this time.

According to police, the altercation reportedly occurred on April 27, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., somewhere between Cedar Road and downtown Nanaimo.

The 20-year-old man who was injured in the incident received treatment at the Nanaimo hospital for a serious non-life threatening injury.

Police said officers went to the Nanaimo hospital and spoke with the man who had numerous cuts and bruises and was receiving treatment for an “apparent stab wound.”

Police said the man told investigators he was walking along the road, when he was approached by an unknown male riding a BMX bike.

The suspect allegedly demanded the man turn over some personal items and proceeded to take out a knife.

A struggle reportedly ensued and both fell to the ground. The man said he received his injury while fighting with the suspect, who fled afterwards on his bike in an unknown direction.

The man, who had no phone, walked to the hospital to seek treatment for his injuries.

Police said the suspect was of medium build, dressed in black and wore a bandana over the lower portion of his face.

Investigators recognize details are limited, however, this appears to be a significant incident that requires further investigation, said Cst Gary O’Brien, media relations officer with the Nanaimo RCMP.

If anyone has information on the incident, they are asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
