People in Nanaimo’s south end were awoken by the sound of an explosion early Saturday morning.
Nanaimo RCMP say they were called to the 100-block of Rainer Street just before 2 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, after reports of an explosion from numerous residents within a three-block radius.
When Mounties arrived on scene, they found a group of people having a bonfire near a home. RCMP say no one was injured.
They tell CHEK News they were unable to determine the source of the explosion, though investigators believe it was connected to the bonfire.
Crews from the Nanaimo Fire Department were also on scene.
RCMP add that no criminality was involved.
