Nanaimo RCMP is investigating a house fire that has been deemed suspicious.

The fire broke out at about 5 a.m. Sunday morning in the 1900 block of Stannard Drive.

RCMP said when officers arrived, fire crews were already on scene and the house was filled with smoke.

The blaze was contained to the one home and no significant damage was reported.

Police said two people were in the home when the fire started and neither person was injured.

RCMP is following a tip that two unknown people were seen running away from the house shortly after the fire started.

“This residence has been a source of concern for the neighborhood [sic] for some time due to illegal squatting and drug use,” said R/Const. Gary O’Brien.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP.
