Nanaimo RCMP have classified two fires that broke out at the Forrest Glen Apartments on Wellington Road over the weekend as arson.

A couple of fires at a Nanaimo apartment building were set intentionally, say police.

Nanaimo RCMP have classified two fires that broke out at the Forrest Glen Apartments on Wellington Road over the weekend as arson.

The fires were set on stairwells within the apartment building on Friday night and Saturday afternoon and were extinguished rather quickly.

“The quick response by tenants, one with a fire extinguisher, the other using a bucket of water, stopped the fire in its tracks and prevented any spread,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP media spokesperson.

Remnants of burnt paper were found at both locations and tenants reported hearing several young voices running away from the site of the first fire, according to Nanaimo RCMP.

“It is unknown if those people are involved but investigators would certainly like to speak with them,” added O’Brien.

Anyone with information on either of these fires is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
