Nanaimo RCMP says that an 83-year-old man has been taken to hospital after he was found injured on his bathroom floor during a wellness check.

Police say that a wellness check was deployed to the man’s residence after a caring neighbour informed police that she hadn’t seen or heard from the man for upward of five days.

According to police, Nicki Wilson — the elderly man’s neighbour — called asking for a wellness check on Monday, December 20, after she hadn’t heard from the 83-year-old Bob for several days.

Wilson says she had taken some Christmas baking over to Bob’s house and left it on his front porch on December 15. The parcel sat there for five days without being touched, which triggered Wilson to call police.

A Nanaimo RCMP officer attended the scene and was informed by Wilson that Bob is very kind and, given his age, everyone tends to keep an eye out for him.

The officer attended Bob’s apartment and looked through his windows only to find the man lying motionless on his bathroom floor. The officer forced the door to the apartment open and called for EHS to attend.

The man was transported to the Nanaimo hospital where he currently resides, although his condition is currently unknown.

“This is why Check Well-Being calls are a priority call for our officers. Additionally, if it had not been for Nicki’s parcel and her concern for her neighbour, this may have been an entirely different outcome. As a footnote, Nicki hopes to be able to give Bob his parcel when he leaves the hospital,” said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
