Nanaimo RCMP have arrested a man in connection with an assault at a hotel in the Harbour City this week.

Gabriel Stephen Nelson is charged with aggravated assault, forcible confinement and robbery.

The 28-year-old Qualicum Beach man will make his first court appearance tomorrow.

A visiting businessman alleges he was assaulted, tied up, threatened and robbed in his hotel room on Thursday.

RCMP believe the victim may have been targeted for his sexual orientation and the incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

The victim suffered serious injuries and needed surgery.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nanaimo RMCP or Crime Stoppers.
