Mounties in the West Shore say a Nanaimo man was arrested twice for committing an indecent act around people, including children, in just a three-day period.

The first incident occurred around 10:18 a.m. on March 24, when police were called to the 1800-block of the Island Highway in Colwood for a report of a man “exposing himself in a sexual manner” in front of a restaurant.

Multiple people witnessed the indecent act, including children, before the man was arrested, according to West Shore RCMP.

The suspect, a 36-year-old Nanaimo man, was released on conditions, including to “remain fully clothed while in public places” and “not to expose his genitals in a public place,” according to police.

Just three days later, on March 27, West Shore RCMP says officers were called to another report of a man committing an indecent act while in view of minors.

This time, police were called to the Six Mile Road bridge in View Royal around 3:57 p.m. by witnesses.

It took police around two hours to locate the man, who was the same suspect from the first incident. Mounties later learned he was also wanted for another indecent act that allegedly took place in Burnaby on Nov. 23, 2023, which he failed to appear in court for.

The suspect was held in police custody until a court appearance Thursday. He remains in custody until his next court date on April 2, Mounties say.

The man faces charges connected to three separate investigations, including three counts of indecent act, one count of indecent exposure to a minor, and one count of failing to comply with a release order.

“Sexual crimes against youths not only affect the victims, but can have lasting effects on the entire community,” said Const. Andrew Matheson, West Shore RCMP media relations officer.

“We are pleased to see this individual off the streets and want to thank the witnesses for their bravery in calling the police right away,” he said in a release Thursday. “Their information was critical in locating and arresting the suspect.”
