Shoppers and staff at a grocery store in Nanaimo’s north end were forced to evacuate for several hours Wednesday night due to an unspecified threat, police say.

The incident happened at around 8:20 p.m. at the Real Canadian Superstore on Metral Drive, near Island Highway North.

RCMP say the store manager received a threat over the phone and then contacted Nanaimo investigators, who determined that it was in the best interest of the employees and their customers to evacuate the building.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue and B.C. Emergency Health Services responded to the grocery store while a Police Services Dog and handler, along with several police officers searched the interior of the building and parking lot.

However, nothing suspicious was found and the store was re-opened to employees at 10 p.m.

Nanaimo RCMP are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact their non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2022-34406.
