Alert Bay artist Beau Dick passes away

A renowned First Nations artist and leader from Alert Bay has died.

Beau Dick was both a master carver and hereditary chief of the Musgmagw Dzawada’enuxw First Nation.

Dick attracted national attention in 2013, when he led a march from Cormorant Island near Port McNeil, to the lawn of the BC Legislature.

He carried two traditional coppers, and broke one to symbolize broken promises to First Nations communities.

Dick’s artwork has been shown in galleries across Canada and around the world.

CORRECTION NOTICE: An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified Beau Dick as a hereditary chief of the ‘Namgis First Nation.
