A familiar face to classical music fans in Victoria is set to stay in the city for several more years.

The Victoria Symphony Orchestra says Maestro Christian Kluxen has signed a contract extension that will see him continue as Music Director through the 2022/2023 season.

VS CEO Kathryn Laurin made the announcement on stage at the Royal Theatre on Monday ahead of the opening night concert.

“We’re thrilled to have Maestro Kluxen remain with the Victoria Symphony until at least 2023,” said Board President Alan Hollingworth.

“He’s built a wonderful rapport with the orchestra and brought new ideas to the concert stage. He’s grown deep roots in our community and really connected with our audience.”

Born in Denmark, Kluxen made his debut with the Victoria Symphony in April 2016 and was announced as the 10th Music Director six months later.

He began his tenure in September 2017.

Kluxen had previously served as Chief Conductor of the Arctic Philharmonic in Norway, and has worked with other orchestras including the London Philharmonic and Strasbourg Philharmonic.
