A Sidney woman is praising officers from her local RCMP detachment after they came to the rescue of a raccoon trapped in a fence on Friday morning.

Melissa Haire said the creature spent an entire night stuck in the fence in her backyard on Seventh Street.

She says they tried to help the raccoon but it would growl every time they approached it.

RCMP officers arrived around 9 a.m. on Friday and, after trying for about 20 minutes, managed to free it.

In the video, you can see the raccoon dash off as soon as its lands on the ground.

It was quite the call for one of the Sidney/North Saanich RCMP officers who responded, he is a new recruit still in field training.
