Motorcyclist killed in Saanich crash identified as former Reynolds Secondary student

A 19-year-old motorcyclist who died Monday in a collision with a car driven by a Reynolds Secondary student previously attended the same school.

Reynolds Secondary School principal Tom Aerts and the Reynolds Secondary Parents’ Advisory Committee confirmed the motorcyclist was Danny Schupbach, a former Reynolds student who graduated in 2018.

Schupbach died at the scene of the crash, which occurred at the Cumberland and Union roads intersection at around 12 p.m. on Sept. 16.

“This news has certainly added more complexity to this tragedy, and we continue to receive support from the school district’s Critical Incident Response Team to help our staff and students as they struggle to process this difficult news,” Aerts wrote in a letter to parents. “Students directly impacted are been identified, connected to counsellor and families have been informed.”

Aerts said all students were notified about the motorcyclist’s identity on Thursday morning.

An obituary on the McCall Gardens website said Schupbach’s friend and family are welcome at a farewell gathering in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens at 4665 Falaise Dr. in Saanich. 

“With the greatest dismay we announce the death of our beloved son and brother, Danny Jack Schupbach, age 19. May he be dancing in the moonlight on his journey with fellow starship troopers,” the obituary says.
